These settings are never set in stone, and as I was entering the capture settings I had the wild idea of shooting nothing but JPG's and setting my camera to Monochrome or black and white. I actually like my black and white settings more in my camera than I do post processing them. Plus, I don't like to post process all of my photos. So off we went to San Francisco with the intent of shooting all black and white and no RAW.

We had so much fun cruising around the Bay area. We spent a day in Napa going to a couple of wineries. We took two tours and they were both fantastic. This was by far our most relaxing day of our vacation, with good food, good wine and tons of photos. Still all in black and white. Some people at the Sterling Vineyard recommended a restaurant in Napa called UVA. It was amazing! I strongly recommend them if you happen to be in Napa. On the way back from Napa, we took the Sausalito route and went down to the water across the Bay. It was pretty chilly but we stopped for ice cream and coffee anyhow. There is a great look out point over the Golden Gate that we took Ryan and Crystal to see. It is amazing and I am always shocked and awed every time we go there. The Golden Gate and city are surreal from this angle. And yes, still all in black and white. More to come...

Castello di Amorosa

Isn't this the coolest place?

Super Cool Lights

Wicked

This had better be good.

Golden Mountains

I saw this view as I was leaving the golf course this evening. Perhaps because I live in Utah and the closest I come to anything island related is Rumbi Grill or the fake palm tree in some seedy bar. (That reminds me of a time we found this super cool Tiki Bar in Boise. I believe it was called The Monkey Bar. Check it out if you make it up to Boise.) Anyhow, I saw these tiles over at Kirei and was floored by the modern look and feel of these coconut tiles. Of course they have been used in moderation and add a ton of drama and texture to the room. I love textures. They make the room have more feeling. I love what they did with the tiles and the mirror frame. On top of looking cool they are recycled from discarded coconut shells. So you are helping the environment while making your house look awesome!

While you are over at Kirei, check out the new Kirei Chocolate Bamboo. They have a few examples, and honestly, all of the rooms they show from the recent San Francisco house tours are all overdone. Well, in my lonely opinion anyway. I was reading through a few of the comments and was surprised by a description of showroom design being excessively overdone. As with graphic design, interior design, should hold true to the hierarchy of the design itself. There is a headline or image that should tell almost the entire story without you having to read the rest of the ad. Then there are support elements that support the headline. Room design is no different. If you have a kick-ass sofa, awesome paintings, and killer lamps, where is the focal point? The whole room? NO! That is not what design is about. If that were the case you could jam pack the entire room with individually interesting items and be done with it. Design is a process of editing a style and creating a feeling and esthetic that you want the room to have. Find a few select items, colors, or pieces and build the room around those. You will most assuredly see a difference.

Sweet Disposition

a moment, a love
a dream aloud
a kiss, a cry
our rights, our wrongs
a moment, a love
a dream aloud
a moment, a love
a dream aloud

Sam

I just got home from photographing one of my friend's sons. This fourth of July I wasn't even really interested in photographing the fireworks. But then I got the idea to try something new. Why not try something a little more abstract and focus more on the lights and the patterns instead of trying to capture the classic firework tracers. I was initially inspired by a series of photos I saw in Banana Republic a few years ago. They had a series of out of focus light sources of different colors. Since then I have taken similar photos and for some reason they really appeal to me. Catching the different firework patterns was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the result. Here's to seeing things differently.

Inspiration

I saw this building a few weeks ago and again yesterday when I was out
for a ride. What really fascinates me about this building is the
rusted metal siding! It is incredible. It looks old, but at the same
time very modern. It goes to show you that you can use a lot of
different materials as siding.
This building is part of the new commercial district in the Day Break
development in South Jordan. There are a number of interesting
buildings going up around this area and I am anxious for them to
remove the fences blocking these streets so I can get a closer look at
the other architecture.

Inspiration

Continuing along with some of my recent "Inspiration" posts... I was perusing a blog I follow on a regular basis, reading about the new Audi Q5 (which I really like) and came across this photo. Of course, the car is gorgeous, but it was all of the concrete which really got me. I love the smooth unstained floors. They are sealed and have a nice matte gloss to them. Not too ostentatious, but nice enough that it could be an ultra cool garage or some trendy showroom. I like how the walls almost match. Very cool space.
